Chronic complications of diabetes – World Diabetes Day

Chronic (Long term) complications of diabetes, whether macrovascular or microvascular, go parallel and often progress together with uncontrolled diabetes…

Out of the important microvascular complications of neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy, perhaps the neuropathy is sinister as it affects almost the entire neural network consisting of the autonomous and peripheral nervous system….

Autonomic neuropathy may be manifested in silent heart attacks, gastroparesis, constipation, diarrhoea, erectile dysfunction, bladder abnormalities…

Peripheral neuropathy may affect nerves of hands and feet severely and may be responsible for loss of sensations and serious diabetic foot disease in many….

Diabetic foot is a condition caused due to combination of DN (diabetic neuropathy) and PVD (peripheral vascular disease)…

It may manifest as ulcer, gangrene, infections, foot deformities, Diabetic foot in untreated cases may lead to amputation….

Poor glycemic control, long duration, age, excess weight, excessive alcohol, smoking, hypertension and dyslipidemia further add to the problem…

Most foot problems are preventable by early identification and prompt treatment…

Wash your feet with soap and water everyday…
Dry your feet well especially between the toes…
Moisturize the feet, but not between the toes…
Check your feet for the cuts, blisters or sores…
Keep your nails reasonably-cut and straight…
Wear clean and comfortable socks (not too tight)..
Have a comfortable-fit, wide toe shoe…
Always be aware of any possible hurt to the feet…
Do not walk barefoot on the floor…

#Humbledoc care of feet ( self-pedicure) in diabetes is as important as face-care (may be more important 😊)….
LOOK INTO THE SOLE OF FEET IN the MIRROR everyday….
Today is WORLD DIABETES DAY- 14th November…
